An image of a puppeteer and the puppet character Rocky from Project Hail Mary.

March was a big month in the cinema, and I couldn’t be more hyped about it. Rocky wish to see Earth movies!

The Secret Agent – Hulu, March 1st

I heard about this film early last year and watched with enjoyment as it entered the Academy Awards race. With nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Casting, and Best International Film, I was quite excited for it to finally hit streaming after a very limited theatrical release. Wagner Moura is electric in everything I’ve seen him in, so this should be a fantastic watch.

Hoppers – Theaters, March 6th

A new, original film from Pixar is always a treat. It looked like most of the plot was shown in the trailer, but I was happy to learn that’s not the case. The bones of this film are similar to one of my recent faves, The Wild Robot. (And the Avatar joke that was spoiled in the trailer did make me cackle.) Not sure when it will hit Disney+, but I imagine that’s coming up soon.

The Bride! – Theaters, March 6th

I’ll just throw in my Letterboxd review here –

I really like Keith Phipps wrapup on The Reveal’s review of The Bride –

“The Bride! is seldom cohesive (and occasionally incoherent) but it’s also rarely boring”

I think that about sums up my takeaway from the film. Visually stunning from beginning to end, but so very confusing. I did find myself loving the numerous film references, from Bonny and Clyde to Fred Astaire – especially the conspicuous use of Putting On the Ritz. In my rating, I think I’m rewarding the overall audacity and cultural distillation, but I can’t deny the scattershot nature of the story.

Project Hail Mary – Theaters, March 20th

This is a low bar, since I haven’t been to the theater much, but this is my favorite film of the year so far. Internet denizens have uncharitably deemed it competency-porn, but I really don’t care. In our current reality, I’ll happily take something hopeful. Ryan Gosling is magnetic, Sandra Hüller is quietly fantastic, and Rocky hate Mark.

As an aside, I was absolutely chuffed when I learned that Rocky’s puppeteer is Oscar’s eligible in Supporting Actor. Rocky win award, question?
