February at the Movies

With this post I’ll have stuck to my resolution for at least 2 months (or more accurately, my resolution bingo card). This month I’ve become more active on the #filmsky community on Bluesky, my own little act of rebellion against the powers-that-be. You can find my profile here – inpraiseoffolly.net on Bluesky – if you want to join the conversation. I try to post interesting movie trivia on Thursdays, if that interests you! February is often known for its dearth of quality movies, but there were enough that caught my eye that I had to be choosy. Nothing here is going to go for an Academy Award (telecast is Sunday!) – except for maybe the first Led Zeppelin film in documentary – but they all look like a good time at the movies.

Becoming Led Zeppelin – Theaters, February 5th

This documentary chronicles the formation and early years of the legendary rock band Led Zeppelin, featuring rare footage and interviews with the band members themselves. The latter part caught my eye my eye, since so many music documentaries shoot from the outside looking in. Reviews have been very positive, so fans of classic rock should definitely give this a look.

Love Hurts – Theaters, February 7th

In this action-comedy, (Academy Award winner) Ke Huy Quan plays a former hitman-turned-realtor. He is forced to reckon with his dangerous past when his estranged brother comes after him. This leads to normal spate of high-octane confrontations you expect from this kind of movie. But, with the mix of humor and thrilling action, I plan to give the Goonies and Indiana Jones star turned action actor his props and sit down with this one.

Captain America: Brave New World – Theaters, February 14th

Following the fairly well received The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson continues his journey as Captain America in yet another Marvel superhero film. He faces new challenges and a conspiracy involving President Thaddeus Ross, recast to Harrison Ford following William Hurt’s death, including a few surprising call backs to the very first MCU film, The Jolly Green Giant The Incredible Hulk.

Riff Raff – Theaters, February 28th

This crime comedy follows a former criminal whose attempt at a normal life is disrupted when his old family shows up for a long-awaited reunion. This movie crept up on me, but with such a star-studded cast, I’ll be checking it out. Its blend of dark humor with a compelling story of family and redemption feels like a story I can really get behind.
