January-May at the Movies
Excuses, excuses, you say. Well you’re right! So here are some movie recommendations.
January
They don’t refer to January and February as ‘Dump-uary’ for nothing, but 2023’s loss was 2024’s gain with Dune: Part Two dropping just before March. It’s still going strong, cresting $700 million globally as of yesterday. …and Mean Girls was fun?
Good Grief – Netflix, January 5th
Mean Girls – now on Paramount
The Kitchen – Netflix, January 19th
Driving Madeleine – Theaters, January 12th
February
The Taste of Things – Theaters Feb 9th
Lisa Frankenstein – now on Peacock
Drive-Away Dolls – now on Peacock
Dune: Part Two – Theaters, Feb 25th
March
Weird batch of movies here – I’ve only seen Spaceman from this list so far, but I did user Gorilla x Kong as an excuse to catch up on all the MonsterVerse™️ movies. Not quite Godzilla Minus One – one of my stand outs from last year – but quite a lot of mindless fun. And a note on Spaceman? It’s weird, y’all.
Spaceman – Netflix, March 1st
Love Lies Bleeding – Theaters, March 8th
Snack Shack – Theaters, March 15th
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – Theaters, March 29th
April
April has had a number of good releases, but I only made it to the theater twice – once to catch the newest Ghostbusters, and once for a 45th anniversary showing of Dawn of the Dead. I’m probably most excited for the pulpiness of Abigail, but we’ll definitely still be talking about Challengers and Civil War come awards season.
Monkey Man – Theaters, April 5th
Civil War – Theaters, April 12th
Abigail – Theaters, April 19th
Challengers – Theaters, April 26th
May
We’re getting close to Summer, and the movies are acting like it. An action comedy from Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling, a childhood comedy from John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds, and an Anya Taylor-Joy vehicle (pun intended). The odd one out is the heartfelt documentary about a man that definitely had a major impact on my life. The Blunt/Krasinski power couple isn’t lost on me, and I’d watch just about anything with Ryan Reynolds in it (except Voices). Similar to the Godzilla flick, I’ll likely use Furiosa as an excuse to go back and watch Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
The Fall Guy – Theaters May 3rd
If – Theaters May 17th
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – Theaters May 24th
Jim Henson Idea Man – Disney+ May 31st
I’ll see you all in June! (hopefully)
